The New Butter That’s Not Butter… And It’s Actually Good for YOU?!

A subscriber recently sent me an article about ghee, the new superfood health craze actually made from butter.  Who knew!

While butter is prepared by churning cream, ghee is prepared by heating butter at high temperatures to separate milk solids from the mixture.  After this separation, the remaining product doesn’t contain any dairy, just saturated fats, which is one of the reasons why many professional chefs prefer ghee to butter in their professional kitchens.  In fact, ghee is perfect for cooking food products at a high heat and unlike olive oil, won’t become stale-smelling while crisping up food (Stopyra).

The roots of ghee can be traced back to Ayurvedic medicine and Indian food culture. Similarly to butter, it’s scrumptious on a variety of foods.  Although some nutritionists are convinced that this “butter that’s not butter” is the new superfood health craze, as it enhances digestion while promoting detoxification and weight loss, other health experts are skeptical until more studies are conducted and scientific evidence is presented (Stopyra).

So where can you find ghee?  Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, and other specialty and health food stores should have it in stock!   However, if you don’t feel like buying it at the store, you could always make your own!  All you have to do is simmer unsalted organic butter for approximately 15 minutes, and then strain the mixture.  This will separate out the milk solids, and viola- you have homemade ghee (Stopyra)!

Has anybody ever heard of ghee or tried it?  Let me know!

NYC Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Delivered by Parachute… WHAT?!

I recently read an article from USA Today that was too quirky not to share with you.  Entitled “Grilled cheese set to parachute into New York City” the article discussed how an Australian restaurant called Jafflechutes has elaborate plans to take their grilled cheeses on an oceanic voyage to the Northern Hemisphere.  But these aren’t your ordinary grilled cheese sandwiches.  In fact, these sandwiches are uniquely delivered to customers via a PARACHUTE.  Crazy right?  Anyway, the Melbourne Group has raised sufficient funds to transfer the parachute-launching grilled cheese bonanza straight to New York City.  Apparently, to be the lucky recipient of a jaffle (this word is Australian for grilled cheese sandwich), customers must submit their order requests into PayPal, and exactly 24 hours prior to the parachute launching, customers and other supporters will be notified of the grilled cheese sandwich drop on Twitter and Facebook.  On the day of the grilled cheese sandwich/parachute launching, the notified customer is directed to stand at a specific location in their town/city (conveniently marked with a white letter ‘X,’ look up to the sky, and do their best to catch their grilled cheese sandwich via parachute (Grisham).

I know this sounds crazy, but it’s totally legitimate (and super creative).  I think that I’m going to put catching a grilled-cheese sandwich parachute from the skies of the Big Apple on my bucket list… New York here I come! 🙂
